Research shows that if the only thing you do is increase student reading time, students' test scores will improve. After seeing limited success from whole class novels, we decided to get rid of them and implement Donalyn Miller's 40 Book Challenge. With this book challenge, we formed student-centered reading and writing workshops, much of which is digitally formatted. This session will include handouts and sample classroom resources such as online student interest surveys, sample weekly online reading responses, structured workshop schedules and sample minilessons and student testimonials. We have seen 100% engagement in class during these workshop times, and students' NWEA reading scores have increased throughout the year, some exponentially. We have been shocked to see the success of this program, and we would love to share what has worked (and what hasn't) in our classroom! This would be an interactive blended session of presentation and roundtable discussion.
